the word "Consciousness" is used when discussing the state of awareness of one's own being and acting. As such it is connected the philosophical notion of Mind (as opposed to Body). The word "Awareness" has a broader application. The cats awareness of the mouse will not as easily be subject of philosophical debate while the cats consciousness often is.
