It is the contamination of the environment with unstable isotopes of certain elements. These isotopes emit high energy alpha, beta, or gamma particles. Exposure to these particles can irreversibly damage DNA, cells, and tissues. This can cause short-term illness, cancer, death, and/or birth defects.
