The book is set during WWII in a Holocaust concentration camp. The character, Elie Wiesel, is initially conflicted because of his internal struggle about staying with his father or leaving him. Interestingly enough, though Elie has been able to 'be there' for others in the camp, keeping their spirits up and being encouraging, he is not able to do this for himself.
