What weather conditions might cause a tree to form thicker or thinner tree rings?

Weather, climate and other environmental factors are recorded in the rings of a tree. A thicker ring would indicate that there was an abundance of food and water and that the climate was optimal for growth. A thiner tree ring would indicate just the opposite.
