Carbon can form a large variety of different compounds. The configuration of carbon is 1s22s22p2, and as such offers at least four possible bonds that are available for combinations to take place. This offers a wide variety of potential combinations to take place, or be orchestrated. Because of this it can form double bonds (and very long chains), increasing the number of potential compounds.
