The big bang theory is a theory that states that the creation of the universe as we know it began with with a 'singularity' where suddenly substance materialized (possibly from a black hole) and expanded quickly (read VERY quickly). A popular idea (arising from the name no doubt) is that there was a very long, very loud 'bang' or explosion. That's not really the case here....it was more of a very quick expansion.
