What did Samuel come to shortly after kneeling to get a drink of water in the creek?

After drinking at the creek, Samuel looked for signs to indentify the marauders. He saw moccassin prints that didn't match anyone's in his family, he also saw horse tracks (unshod). Samuel later came upon the place where the attack had happened, saw the dead bodies and bloodshed. Then he saw how it ended..... all of the cabins had been burned down..... all of the captives had been led away.
