The Spanish initially explored the area in 1521. Gordillo did not, however, attempt to establish a settlement at this time. Unfortunately, he did antagonize and anger the natives living in the area when he captured and kidnapped many of their people. These captives were then sold into slavery.

Five years later, Lucas Vasquez de Ayllón, travled to the same area with approximately 600 settlers. Their intent was to establish a settlement. These settlers would find their task difficult due to unfavorable weather, illness, a lack of supplies, and the hostility of the natives, not to mention, the death of their leader. Six months after de Ayllón died, the Spanish departed.
