What could the king do according to the Petition of Rights?

The Petition of Rights states those things the King cannot do, as stated in the petition that Parliament declared in 1628, while England was under the rule of Charles I. The Petition of Rights appears again, as it relates to the British colonies in America, prior to the American Revolution. According to the Petition of Rights, the King cannot;

• that no freeman should be forced to pay any tax, loan, or benevolence, unless in accordance with an act of parliament

• that no freeman should be imprisoned contrary to the laws of the land

• that soldiers and sailors should not be billeted on private persons

• commissions to punish soldiers and sailors by martial law should be abolished.
