What are the Franks doing when they decide to ‘take the cross’?

The Franks are participating in a tournament initiated by Count Thibault of Champagne in honor of the Pope's call. Villehardouin, as well as his nephew and a number of other participants committed themselves to the crusade on the day of this tournament.
