How did the farmers get word about the war and battles in the Civil War?

Without knowing the source you're working with, I can only surmise that the farmers in question received new of the war from messengers..... riders traveling back and forth delivering messages. The telegraph, which had recently been implemented, would have allowed for quick transmission of news but would not have been available to rural farmers.
