After the Civil War the KKK began in the South to keep the freed slaves in thier place through fear and brutality. African Americans were still treated as second-class citizens either working in for very low wages so that they remained poor or they worked as sharecroppers often for their former masters. A few former slaves such as Robert Smalls worked into a postion of power in the Reconstruction era government.
