Who is The Wampanoag ( from Caleb's Crossing: A Novel and what is their importance?

"Wampanoag" was the name given to the community of natives living near the white community where Bethia and her family made their home. The native community had a fairly good relationship with the white people of the area in spite of Tequamuck's actions. Pastor Mayfield played a large part in keeping the peace.
