Who is General William T. Sherman from The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery and what is their importance?

General William T. Sherman commanded Union troops during the Civil War. As the war began to come to a close, Sherman moved his troops South, where he assigned plots of land to slaves who had recently learned of their freedom due to the Emancipation Proclamation.
