Benito Cereno is the captain of San Dominick, an old Spanish galleon. In the story, Cereno is transporting several guests along the west coast of South America, when Cereno is captured during a slave revolt aboard ship. He is forced to watch helplessly while his officers and senior men are murdered, and is later saved when they come upon another ship, whose captain, a man by the name of Delano sees his plight and recaptures the ship from the slaves. In the end, Cereno is a broken man.
