Who is Anne from Caleb's Crossing: A Novel and what is their importance?

Anne is a young native woman, who has been educated in the ways of Christianity and white people. She studies at Master Corlett's. Unfortunately, Anne is impregnated by a white man of considerable status, and the potential scandal threatens to end her life. She escapes with the help of Bethia, Makepeace and Noah. She later marries Joel, who is murdered, leaving her a widow.
