How did Erik Vandenburg save Hans Hubermann's life in the first world war?

Erik nominated Hans to take care of the correspondence to be sent to the families of those who'd been killed in action.... the death notices. Thus, he was left behind. Everyone else in his unit, including Erik, were killed that day.
