Describe the flag that the animals created. Why do you suppose Orwell choose the symbols for the flag. ( remember the historical events for which this book was allegory. Research the symbols of the USSR.

The animals made their flag from an old green tablecloth, after which, they painted a white hoof and horn on it. Snowball made the flag. The green represented the green fields; the hoof and horn represented the future Republic that the Animals would establish when all humans had been overthrown.

Ironically, outside of the color, the flag was very similar to that of the communist flag. By using the color green, however, we can infer that the "green fields" were a symbol of peace and tranquility...... the peace and tranquility the animals believed they were fighting for that they never attained..... very similar to the people of the USSR and the revolution that came to naught.
