Stuart might have lost his life if Hammer had gotten to him. Hammer has had all he will take from years of prejudicial treatment by white people. He knows, especially, that during the time that this was set, that black women did not fare well at the hands of a white man. Hammer would certainly have gone to jail for daring to lay a hand on Stuart, let alone cause him bodily injury. Papa knew this and was able to diffuse the situation for everyone.
