The Widow is young, beautiful, sad, and happy to be alone. Unfortunately, she is also the object of desire for numerous men, young and old, who would love to take the place of her dead husband. In the end, she gives into her own desires and spends a night with the Narrator, something that infuriates the townspeople (particularly the women who are jealous of her) who mark her a wanton, and subsequently stone her.
