Humor, with jokes and punch lines ingrained in the dialogue, is essential to the storyline. Images of emptiness, female barrenness, and sexual roles are also inherent in the plot. Student comments and Zoe's memory of a line of poetry are inserted into the text as italicized lines, intentionally interrupting the flow of the story.
