One important conflict can be found in the inner conflict between the young woman's physical fear of Silva and her sexual desire for him. She does not attempt to either flee or to protect herself from Silva, and Silva ultimately forces himself upon her - "You don't understand do you, little yellow woman? You will do what I want."
