The tone of the book is mainly subjective, although Gary tries at different places to step back and view his experience objectively. Since the story presents a spiritual and life-changing experience, it is difficult for Gary to truly see events from an objective standpoint. Gary's wife, Ruth, would be bettered suited to present an objective opinion, but her voice does not surface much throughout the book.
