Mental Health is a recurring idea in the text. Mental health is a major thread throughout the novel, especially in Grayson’s storyline, that explores the way mental illness and wellness can impact people beyond their control, and avenues to try to counteract this influence. Grayson struggles with his mental health throughout his life. At the beginning, he is in a very dark place mentally. The authors exemplify this through Grayson’s violent thoughts, like, “every morning i pray that the school bus will crash and we’ll all die in a fiery wreck” (23). This sort of perverse thought clues the reader into Grayson’s atypical mental state and how this will become an influential factor throughout the novel.
