The speaker's emotional exhaustion shapes her state of mind in the poem. She has been struggling with her emotions and wants peace so much that when she sees swans in flight, her impulse is to look into her heart. She seems to expect a vision or experience to bring about a change in her that will lead to emotional relief. Upon seeing the swans, however, she finds little change in her heart.
