The Power of Love versus Programmed Duty is a recurring idea of the story. Peter Stride is used as a pawn by Caliph in several instances in this story. In the beginning, Kingston Parker uses his position as Peter's boss to attempt to manipulate the outcome of the terrorist attack on BA flight 070. He wants Peter to be there and to look like he is doing his job, when in reality Kingston wants Peter to stand down. It is his character and training that won't allow him to sit by and watch while everyone gives in to the demands being made, even if he has to do so without support. It is this same character that Kingston counts on when he expressly tells Peter not to harm Magda Altmann after he has spent a great deal of time making it appear as though she is Caliph.
