One major theme in the novel is that of small time life.... the good things and the bad. The author embraces community, and the way the citizens in small towns are able to bolster and support their family, friends, and neighbors. None-the-less, the author also exposes the way small town may also serve to constrict people..... take away their dreams or isolate them as a response to loyalty or lack of opportunity.
