Although Anna is the main character in the book, Papa is, in many ways, the man who drives the plot. Once a famous writer and critic of the Nazi Party, he knew that as Jew, remaining in Germany would prove to be dangerous for him and his family. Because of this, Papa takes his family and leaves the country before the 1933 elections, moving his family from their home in Berlin to Switzerland. As the war escalates, the family moves multiple times. Papa is determined to keep everone safe.
