Achor Achor was Valentino's best friend. The two met at the Pinyodo refugee camp in Ethiopia. They later split up when Ethiopian soldiers forced the Sudanese out of the camp but reunited on the other side of the Gilo River. Achor and Valentino attended classes together in Kakuma. When Gop's wife and children arrived at the camp, he built a new section for Valentino. Because it was highly irregular that a boy have his own room, Gop invited five other boys to stay, including Achor Achor.

Valentino respected Achor Achor and he is presented as a strong individual. Unlike the others, Achor Achor never got sick. In Pinyodo, he showed Valentino how to fish, and later, on their walk to Kakuma, he showed him how to make a cup out of a tin can. Valentino admits that it would have been difficult to survive without Achor Achor. In the end, they share an apartment in Atlanta.
