In the section titled, Family Pictures: The Doe, Judd's encounter with the doe is symbolic of some of the foreshadowing in the previous chapter. Judd mentioned a daughter being sent away by her father. The doe is symbolic of this female alone and unprotected. The death of the doe is symbolic, but also it lays more foreshadowing for the reader. The reader must wonder if the doe's death will reflect some horrible event that will befall the daughter in the following chapters.
