One important thing that comes from reading this book is how resistance brings about a shift of perspective and power. The other real point is how unfounded fears can ruin people's lives. We see that played out in the fact that the whites were afraid that the blacks would rise up and take over their lives. Another point is that it is wrong to make generalizations about one person based on the actions of a larger group (race, gender, ethnicity). A good point that is made in this book, also, is that something is 'lost' when an entire society turns its back on a large segment of their population and does not include them. Lastly, there is power in solidarity.
