Why do Sal and her mother prefer the term indian to native American?

In chapters 9-12 questions ask why dose Sal & her mother use the term Indian to Native American.

Sal and her grandma once had a discussion about whether to use the term “Native American” or “Indian.” She recalled her mother saying that “Indian sounds much more brave and elegant”..... that the “Indian-ness” in their background was actually responsible for their appreciation of nature and that it made them “closer to the earth.
