In Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot, what does the character of 'the boy' stand for?

When Vladimir asks what Godot does the boy tells him, "He does nothing, sir."

When Vladimir asks what Godot does the boy tells him, "He does nothing, sir."  The boy may symbolize the messenger, saying that Godot will return.  He may also represent youth and innocence.
