Who is Jo from Waiting for Anya and what is their importance?

Jo is a twelve year old boy living in a small French village during World War II. All the able bodied men of the village, those young and strong, have gone off to fight the war. This includes Jo's father. Unfortunately, all the men, with the exception of a cousin who was killed, have been taken as prisoners-of-war.
