Ulrika of Vastergohl is often referred to as the "Glad One" or "Unmarried Ulrika". She is a prostitute and the mother of a young daughter. The woman in the village believe that Ulrika should be ashamed of herself, but Ulrika is proud of her life. She is later accepted as a member of the group, and after arriving in America, she finds herself the object of numerous marriage proposals. In the end, she marries a baptist preacher.
