Who is Stephen Dedalus from Ulysses and what is their importance?

Stephen Dedalus is an intelligent, poetic, well-read young man, who has just returned from France where he studied medicine. Saddened by his mother's death, Stephen takes a job teaching at a boy's school. He spends his free time talking about his literary theories and drinking with his friends.
