He didn't, really. For many years he worked silently for Ford, but later when he was sold to Tibeats and the new owner threatened to whip him, Northup refused to allow himself to be whipped. Finally, he trusted a white man from Canada with the truth of his abduction . This man wrote letters on his behalf to get him freed.
