The primary conflict is gender related... yes, the murder and its cause are in question, but the author goes deeper than this. We are in the early 199s, women stay home, take care of their families, help on the homestead, and take care of their homes. They aren't expected to have opinions, and when they do, the men generally don't take much stock in what they have to say.... the exact reason why the women discern the truth, and the men are left to wonder.
