Steinbeck sees Texans are unique Americans. Although the landscape of Texas varies significantly, all Texans consider themselves of the same overall clan. He notes that Texas is the only state in the Union that has joined as a sovereign nation. Texas could legally secede at any time, and although this is sometimes threatened, Texans would not like the rest of the Union to ask for the state to secede.
