The story takes place on a land mass (island) off the Alaskan coast, where Cole Matthews is to spend a year in banishment. He accepts it as a way to avoid jail but initially refuses to allow himself to change, which is the real purpose of his time here. There is a large bay on the island, which provides a place for the boats to land when they arrive from the mainland. The island is wooded and has fresh water in the form of a creek.
