Sacrifice and obedience are recurring themes in the book. Yue Daiyun always tried to be obedient to the Party and to the goals of the Revolution. The system did not encourage independent thinking. Independent thinkers were accused of individualism and of being rightists. Yue Daiyun always tried to follow the Party policy. When the Party encouraged openness and criticism, she took part in discussion groups only to find herself labeled as a rightist and sent to the countryside for two years of rehabilitation.
