Why do Dill and Jem want to give Boo a note and what does Atticus say when he discovers their plan?

The kids want to lure Boo out of his home so that they can get a peek at him. They've been told all sorts of things about him and they want to see if it is true. When Atticus finds out about it he is upset with the kids and says that they should just knock on the door and act decently about it.
