What is the moral story behind To Kill a Mockingbird?

The moral of the story (or theme) is that of innocence. The story is told from the viewpoint of Scout who is very young. Her thoughts and perspectives about race have not yet been marred by the social divisions that define her town. It is about maturing and coming to terms with some of the ugliness that lives in the world and that you can define it or be defined by it.
