Mr. Sweet's old steel guitar is a metaphor for his soul and gifts to the world. He used it to play and sing songs to the children. During the "revivals," the narrator's brother would pick it up and play it, doing an impression of Mr. Sweet. After Mr. Sweet's death, he leaves the guitar to the narrator, who plays on it Mr. Sweet's favorite song.
