Timon of Athens by William Shakespeare is a play that examines the life of an Athenian gentleman named Timon. Timon is wealthy and very generous, but expects to be rewarded and praised for his generosity. He becomes angry and distraught when he learns from his steward Flavius that his “friends” have discarded his good deeds and hires Alcibiades to destroy the city. However, Alcibiades chooses not to upon receiving word that Timon is dead.
