Loyalty is a theme in the novel. Blofeld, as head of SPECTRE, demands unquestioning loyalty from his group of cutthroats. For disobeying SPECTRE's dictates, the punishment is death. As Blofeld's surrogate, Largo demands the same unquestioning loyalty. To enjoy the profits available as members of the group, each member must suppress his individual needs, thoughts, and instinct and, with unquestioning loyalty, follow the leader.
