Chief Joseph was inherently loyal to his family and his people. He was also loyal to his agreements. An example of this can be found in his refusal to move his people to Lapwai, because it would mean displacing the other people who already live there and call that place their own. In this way, he is loyal to his people, who deserve their own land, and he is loyal to the Lapwai because he refuses to impede upon their land, even though he is pushed to do so.
