Bias is a recurring idea in the book. The people of Pierre are strict, churchgoing people. These people do not approve of certain aspects of other people's lives, such as the behavior of the carnival people or the actions of drinkers. For this reason, many of the people of Pierre have preconceived opinions in regards to some others, particularly Bennie.
