There are a number of boating experiences mentioned in chapaters 13-19 of Three Men in a Boat. The first incident, actually taking place, is when a huge steamboat comes up on their smaller boat and they 'pretend' that they cannot hear it blowing its horn. At the last minute that act as if they don't know how to move the boat out of the way infuriating the steamboat captain. The other incident is them remembering when they rented a sailboat and tried to sail it in heavy wind when no one knew how to sail.
