In Achebe's novel, Things Fall Apart, the author's purpose does not seem to be one of compelling the reader to like or dislike this character or that character, but rather to depict in realistic fashion the push and pull of coloninalism and how it can ultimately destroy lives and a culture. It is a cautionary tale in many respects.
